À FLEUR DE PEAU, 2001 - UNDER THE SKIN |
terrestre.
300 urethane fish/objects are conceived starting from the moulding of genuine brook trout and then painted in a realistic way. These fishes are juxtaposed on the ground in a wave configuration. The ground, surfaces or derma, (from there its title) is amalgamated with the object. The particularity of the installation launches a fiction: a strange both marine and terrestrial landscape. The artwork becomes animated by the place expressing concepts of territoriality and specific identity to any physical existence: a place to be, to be defined, to affirm themselves, to live, to breathe… Moreover, four photographs show us fishes wandering the landscape of St-Denis-sur-Richelieu. They highlight the adventure, the history of this fish school that became bohemians of this social space… following in the footsteps of mankind. The format of the photographs evokes the pictorial tradition of the landscape. The aspect of the place, from the grounds/earth varies according to the seasons, the agricultural activity of the area: ploughing, seeding, dormancy… which one after the other modifies the landscape. This illustrated report, witness of a surreal moment in life, questions our perception of nature. Giving birth to confusion between the improbability and the probability of its representation. In complement, we take part in this fiction by sharing the same places as these fishes which invade, this time, the space of exposure. This place which they have made their own to express their presence.
